Tucked away in the bustling Eminönü district, Ahi Çelebi Cami has witnessed centuries of Istanbul’s vibrant history. Ahi Çelebi Cami isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a place where history and folklore intertwine. The mosque’s founder, Ahi Mehmet Çelebi, was a prominent physician during the reigns of Bayezid II and Selim I. His expertise extended beyond medicine, as he also held the position of *hekimbaşı*, chief physician, twice. His father, Mevlana Kemal, was also a renowned physician, serving under both Mehmed the Conqueror and Bayezid II. Ahi Çelebi Cami is also known as Kanlıfırın Mescidi and Yemişçiler Camii. The mosque has faced its share of adversity. It endured fires in 1539 and 1653, and even suffered damage during the 1892 earthquake. Each time, it was painstakingly restored, a testament to its enduring importance. The single dome of Ahi Çelebi Cami is supported by two arches, crafted from stone and brick. An iron ring encircles the dome’s base. Steps lead up to the mosque’s entrance. During the 1990s restoration, the minaret was also renewed. Ahi Çelebi Cami holds a special place in Istanbul’s folklore thanks to Evliya Çelebi. He documented his famous dream, a vision of the Prophet Muhammad, right here in this very mosque. In his dream, Evliya Çelebi mistakenly asked for “seyahat” (travel) instead of “şefaat” (intercession). This slip of the tongue amused the Prophet, who granted Evliya Çelebi safe travels. This dream solidified Ahi Çelebi Cami’s place in local lore. A visit here offers not just architectural appreciation, but a glimpse into the spiritual and cultural fabric of Istanbul.
