Penang’s street art scene began less than a decade ago. In 2008 George Town became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was recognized as a living museum. People still lived as they had a century ago. Properties retained their original forms.

In 2012 the municipal council wanted to breathe new life into traditional shop houses. They worked with Ernest Zacharevic. He was a London-trained Lithuanian artist. He created Penang wall art. It revived the rich history of the streets.

Ernest was commissioned to do six Penang wall murals. They were inspired by the everyday lives of locals. They captured the lively spirit of the city. The scenes were quirky interactive and relatable. This tactful artistry brought out the city’s distinct identity and multiculturalism.

Other creative works exist as iron rod sculptures. They illustrate long-forgotten anecdotes. Today they mark the lanes of Penang.
