In 1888, a newly freed slave, Domingos Camões, stumbled upon a hidden treasure – the second hydromineral spring discovered in Rio de Janeiro. Camões, recognizing the value of his discovery, began bottling the water in 5-liter wine bottles in 1909. He distributed them, carried on the back of donkeys, throughout the region. This act solidified Água Santa’s name and laid the foundation for the neighborhood’s identity. The company Águas Santa Cruz Ltda., established in 1914, continues to bottle the spring water to this day, preserving the legacy of the miraculous spring. Today, Água Santa retains its charm as a predominantly residential haven, offering a peaceful escape from the city’s bustle. While modern conveniences are present, Água Santa has managed to preserve a sense of community and tranquility.
