Woof The energetic barks of excited dogs fill the air. This is the Akarana Dog Training Club’s Agility Course in Mount Albert Auckland. Established in 1961 this course has seen countless dogs and their handlers improve their skills. It’s not just about winning competitions. It’s about the bond between dog and owner.

The Akarana Dog Training Club offers a Foundation Agility course. This 8-week course introduces dogs and their handlers to the basics of agility. Jumps tunnels weave poles and contact equipment like the A-frame or seesaw are used. The fastest dog with the fewest mistakes wins but most participants focus on the fun and exercise.

The course is popular and spaces are limited. Dogs must be at least 12 months old but no older than 6 years. They need full vaccinations for Parvo Virus and Kennel Cough. Leptospirosis is optional. Akarana recommends completing a basic obedience course first. Good recall is crucial. Dogs should follow simple instructions even with distractions. Puppies under 12 months can be put on a waiting list for when they turn 18 months old. Obstacle heights and the number of weave poles are adjusted for younger dogs.

After completing the Foundation course weekly training continues. Experienced instructors teach advanced handling skills. There is also the opportunity to participate in agility competitions. Annual club membership is required for continued training. This costs $120 per year. Dogs must have reliable recall and work confidently off-lead.

Classes are held Thursday evenings from 7 pm to 8 pm for the Foundation course. Ongoing training is on Tuesday evenings. Independent training is available on Wednesdays. However this is only for club instructors and members with two or more years of training. Participants should arrive 15 minutes early. They should make sure their dogs have been to the toilet. Everyone helps put the equipment away after class.
