How about a hidden gem whispered among locals? That’s Agardlands in Castries. Though it might not leap out from the typical tourist brochures, Agardlands holds a story.

Agardlands is nestled within Castries, the capital and largest city of Saint Lucia. Castries boasts a rich history itself. Founded by the French in 1650, it was originally named Carénage. This name meant safe anchorage. This was due to its deep water port. In 1756, the city was renamed Castries. This was in honor of Charles Eugène Gabriel de La Croix. He was the Marquis de Castries.

Saint Lucia’s story is one of constant change. The island was first known as Louanalao by the Arawak Indians around 200 AD. This meant Island of the Iguanas. Then, in 800 AD, the Carib Indians arrived. They called it Hewanorra. This meant there where iguanas are found.

The island became a prize fought over by European powers. The French and English battled for control 14 times. Saint Lucia was even called the Helen of the West, like Helen of Troy. This was because of its immensely valuable geopolitical position. The British finally secured it in 1814.

Castries has seen its share of turmoil too. The city was rebuilt several times. Major fires struck in 1805, 1813, and most notably in 1948. Despite these setbacks, Castries has always risen from the ashes. It became a bustling hub.

Today, Castries is a major tourist destination. Cruise ships dock at Pointe Seraphine. Visitors explore landmarks like the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and Derek Walcott Square.

Agardlands may be a quiet corner of this vibrant city. But it’s still part of Saint Lucia’s incredible story. A story of native inhabitants and European colonists. A story of battles and resilience. A story of cultural fusion. So, when you explore Agardlands, remember you are walking through layers of history.
