The roar of a helicopter’s engine cuts through the air. This is the Aeropuerto Mariano Moreno-VII Brigada Aérea. This isn’t just any airport. It’s a vital hub for Argentina’s air force. A place where history and heroism intertwine with the whirring blades of modern aircraft.

Established on January 9 1951 the VII Brigada Aérea began its journey at the Morón Air Base. It wasn’t always here in José C Paz. Initially housing Groups 2 and 3 of fighter planes the base saw significant change. These groups later became fighter-bomber groups. The arrival of helicopters in 1969 marked a new era. These were not ordinary helicopters. Bell 1H-1D helicopters became a core part of its operations. These were state-of-the-art replacements of Sikorsky H-19 models. Hughes 369HM and Sikorsky S-58T helicopters were later added.

The airport’s role in search and rescue is legendary. In 1971 the Search and Rescue Squadron I joined the Brigada Aérea. They flew missions across vast distances. Their work stretched from Panama all the way to the Falkland Islands. These courageous pilots flew in UH-16B Albatros DHC-2 Beaver DHC-3 Otter and LC-47H aircraft. The addition of C-130 Hercules aircraft greatly increased their reach and capabilities in these missions.

The VII Brigada Aérea’s current location wasn’t its original home. It moved to its present site on May 16 1988. This was after the deactivation of the VIII Brigada Aérea. Now the base boasts a fleet of helicopters. Bell 212 and UH-1D helicopters are used for search and rescue. They also provide crucial support to Antarctic bases. The Hughes 369HM and 500D/E helicopters are used in tactical operations. They are also central to training programs. The Comando Support Squadron EAC participates in combat rescue missions. They also provide vital ground support for various operations.

The Mariano Moreno Airport isn’t just a military airfield. It’s a testament to Argentina’s commitment to its defense. It’s also a reminder of the brave men and women who serve protecting the nation. The next time you hear a helicopter’s thrum remember this place. Remember the bravery the skill and the long history woven into the fabric of this impressive airport. Remember the Aeropuerto Mariano Moreno-VII Brigada Aérea.
