Doesn’t the name Adventskirche evoke images of candlelit services? It stands as a testament to faith and resilience in Kassel. This church has a unique story that intertwines with the history of Wehlheiden.

Back in 1888, this area was part of the parish of Weißenstein. The Adventskirche became the heart of a new independent parish. Imagine the joy when the Adventskirche was inaugurated on December 22, 1888. This special day was the fourth Sunday of Advent.

Sigmund Aschrott, a Jewish businessman, gifted the land for the church. This act of generosity allowed the construction of the Adventskirche in the neogothic style. In 1909, the church officially received the name Adventskirche.

However, the ravages of World War II struck a devastating blow. In October 1943, British bombers nearly destroyed the Adventskirche. The towering spire crashed into Lassallestraße. The side wings were completely ruined and the church was gutted by fire.

But the community’s spirit remained unbroken. Reconstruction began in 1961. On the first Sunday of Advent in 1963, the Adventskirche reopened in a significantly altered form. The rebuilt tower lacks the original slender, pointed spire. Today, it stands as a “Stummelturm” or truncated tower. The floor plan was redesigned to include a chapel and community center.

Look closely at the bronze portal doors. Hermann Pohl designed these reliefs depicting biblical scenes related to Advent. The stained glass windows are the work of Hans Leistikow. Siegfried Gerstgrasser created the baptismal font from Canadian pine in 1995.

The Adventskirche also boasts a remarkable organ. Werner Bosch built it in 1966. The organ has 23 registers spread across two manuals and a pedal.

Consider the journey of the Adventskirche. From its neogothic beginnings to its modern form, it has witnessed war and renewal. Today, it continues to be a beacon of faith in Kassel. The Adventskirche stands as a reminder of community and hope.
