Originally a late Romanesque village church Adslev Kirke has undergone several transformations. These changes occurred throughout its history. You stand before a building rich with stories. Adslev Kirke is located in the village of Adslev. It is approximately 8 kilometers northeast of Skanderborg.

Adslev Kirke’s nave and chancel were constructed in the Romanesque style. They feature granite ashlars atop a chamfered plinth. The porch dates back to the late 1800s. The tower was added in 1925. The masonry shows signs of recent renovations. Only faint traces of the original details remain. Except for the rectangular south door Adslev Kirke appears quite different now. A major renovation of Adslev Kirke occurred in 1934.

Notice the chancel arch. It was altered to a pointed arch during the late Gothic period. This change happened when cross vaults were built in the chancel and nave. The altarpiece dates from 1916. It features a painting by Rud-Petersen from 1913. Three figures from a late Gothic altarpiece are suspended in Adslev Kirke. This altarpiece was discarded in 1595. The pulpit dates from 1855.

Look up to see the frescoes in the chancel and nave vaults. These paintings were created between 1480 and 1498. They were uncovered and restored in 1969. Adslev Kirke’s frescoes underwent further restoration in 2000. In the chancel’s eastern section a flower vase and the year 1498 are visible. In the chancel’s northern section you can spot the painter’s signature. It is a chair with a cross-shaped back. This signature also appears in Hvilsted Kirke and Sønder Vissing Kirke. In the vault above the font three roses are depicted. These roses symbolize Bishop Jens Iversen Lange.

Admire the Romanesque granite font. It features double lions with a male head on the basin. Adslev Kirke is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith art and history. Take a moment to appreciate the layers of time. Each stone each painting and each alteration tells a story. Adslev Kirke stands as a symbol of enduring heritage.
