It’s a living, breathing piece of San Francisco’s cultural heart. Founded in 1989 by Andrew McKinley on 16th Street, Adobe Books quickly became a haven. It was known as “The Living Room of the Mission.” Artists, musicians, writers, and anyone seeking a comfy couch and a sense of belonging found their home at Adobe Books. The back room transformed into a gallery in 2001. Led by Amanda Eicher, the Adobe Books Backroom Gallery gave hundreds of artists a space to experiment and create. Adobe Books is linked to the rise of the Mission School art movement. Artists like Chris Johanson, Alicia McCarthy, Barry McGee, and many others showcased their work here. Musicians like Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom filled the shop with music. Authors like Rebecca Solnit and Michael Bernard Loggins became familiar faces. In 2004, artist Chris Cobb reorganized the entire 20,000-book inventory by color, making national news. When faced with a rent hike in 2012, the community rallied. They crowdfunded $60,000 and moved Adobe Books to its current location on 24th Street. Now a worker-owned cooperative, Adobe Books thrives on the dedication of its volunteers. It hosts hundreds of free events each year. It is an active member of the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District and other community organizations. Adobe Books donates to a prison literacy project and offers free space for neighborhood groups. It continues to be a place where languages mingle and people connect.
