Tucked away on Addison Street in Chicago’s vibrant Northcenter neighborhood stands Addison Street Community Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and community. Its story begins in 1893. Six men and four women gathered for the first time as the Gross Park Congregational Church. They met near Roscoe and Leavitt streets. Western Avenue was then the city’s edge. A golf course occupied the space where Lane Tech High School now stands. Chicago was booming that year. The World’s Fair attracted visitors from around the globe. The neighborhood was predominantly German. Several local schools opened their doors that same year. A generous Christian businessman from Oak Park funded the original church building.

As Chicago grew the church found itself surrounded. Its location became less ideal. In 1911 the congregation took an extraordinary step. They moved the entire building. They used wooden logs and horses. The church slowly inched to its current location on Addison and Hamilton. This move reflects the church’s adaptability and unwavering spirit.

For decades Addison Street Congregational Church as it later became known served as the sole Congregationalist church between Lake Michigan and Cumberland Avenue. Denominational mergers reshaped the religious landscape. In 1931 the Congregationalist and Christian denominations united. Addison Street Community Church however did not adopt the ‘Christian’ name. Further mergers in 1957 led to the formation of the United Church of Christ. Our church joined this denomination in 1960. The church endured numerous hardships. The Great Depression world wars and a revolving door of pastors threatened its existence. Three planned closures almost ended its history. But God had other plans.

In 1963 George Rice a young youth minister arrived. He became the interim pastor. He found the church’s spiritual state to be in dire need of revival. He described it as having a ‘box seat in hell’. Rice’s commitment to evangelical Christian faith changed everything. He served faithfully for fifty years. The congregation’s renewed commitment to generosity and evangelism saved the church. The church adopted a more Baptist theological perspective due to Pastor Rice’s background and ties to the Baptist General Conference.

Gentrification in the surrounding neighborhoods presented new challenges. The church became more inward-focused losing touch with the community. This combined with a national decline in religious fervor tested the church. However Addison Street Community Church persevered. It continues to be a beacon of light. It serves its neighborhood for God’s glory and the joy of its members. In recent years the church has refocused. It emphasizes the Bible’s teachings on Jesus and serving the community. Today Addison Street Community Church is experiencing a gospel resurgence. Its enduring legacy shows the power of faith perseverance and the transformative impact of a committed community.
