Addison Bible Church

Did you know that Addison Bible Church once hosted so many weddings that the pastor sometimes performed three on a single Saturday? This unassuming spot at Addison Road and Fullerton Avenue in Addison Illinois holds a surprising history. For decades Addison Bible Church was a vibrant hub of the community. Founded in 1954 by Albert Kurz the church started modestly in his home. Services later moved to a dance hall attached to a local fire station. Can you imagine? Sunday sermons with the clinking of glasses from the bar next door. Some attendees even found faith amidst the unlikely setting. Kurz himself designed and oversaw much of the church’s construction. Church members bravely raised the building’s structure. They even put the roof on themselves. One memorable anecdote tells of members fearing the descent down the ladder after completing their work at dizzying heights. The building became a testament to faith and community spirit. For years Addison Bible Church thrived. Pastor Don Lake recalled a time of incredible growth. The church attracted people from various backgrounds. A strong children’s club program brought in many youngsters. It was described as a “blue-collar church”. It served the community for over fifty years. Sadly the church eventually closed its doors in 2005. A merger with Harvest Bible Chapel in Glen Ellyn aimed at attracting younger members backfired. It resulted in the church’s closure citing “disunity”. Despite this unfortunate end the reunion held years later drew more than 200 former members. Their shared memories reaffirmed the church’s enduring legacy. Many spoke of inspiring sermons and joyful events such as Christmas and Easter cantatas. Even those who had moved on from the church spoke of its lasting influence on their lives. Addison Bible Church may be gone but its spirit and the stories it holds continue to resonate.
