Curious about where Dallas’ aviation dreams take flight? Addison Airport is the place. This public airport in Addison, Dallas County, Texas is more than just a runway. It’s a vibrant hub with a rich history.

Addison Airport is located 9 miles north of downtown Dallas. The airport opened in 1954. The town of Addison purchased it in 1976.

Let’s rewind to Addison’s early days. The town formed in 1904 around a railway depot. In 1953, residents voted to incorporate to avoid annexation by neighboring cities. By the mid-1950s, Addison had about five hundred residents.

Enter W.T. Overton. In 1956, he announced plans to build Addison Airport on a large farm he purchased. Overton envisioned the airfield as a haven for business jets, a novel idea at the time.

Overton and his partners chose the Addison Airport site strategically. Statistics showed that Texas had a high concentration of aircraft owners. Dallas County was home to the largest cluster of these owners. Upscale residential development was also growing in the northern part of the county.

Addison Airport, Inc. was founded on August 30, 1956. The company laid out an industrial park near the railway line and runway. The airport broke ground on March 16, 1957. The airfield featured a terminal building and a primary runway.

The runway was deliberately longer than the one at Redbird Airport in South Dallas. Addison Airport hired Henry Stuart to manage the airport. Stuart had managed Park Cities Airport. Addison also built its first public water system.

The airport’s grand opening took place on October 18, 1957. Addison Airport covers 368 acres. Its runway is 7,203 feet long. In 2023, it had 119,065 aircraft operations. That’s an average of 326 per day. General aviation accounted for 68% of these operations.

Today, Addison Airport is home to many aircraft. You can find single-engine planes, multi-engine planes, jets, and helicopters here. Atlantic Aviation, Galaxy, and Million Air are the fixed-base operators.

Charter services are available from Business Jet Solutions and Bombardier FlexJet. Addison Airport also serves as the headquarters for several companies. These include Ameristar Jet Charter, GTA Air, and Martinaire. AirNet Express, Flight Express, and Flight Development operate scheduled freight flights from here.

Aspiring pilots flock to Addison Airport. Thrust Flight School, American Flyers, and other schools offer flight instruction. Addison Airport is the busiest general aviation airport in Texas. It is among the five busiest in the United States. Addison Airport is also the busiest single-runway airport in the country.

Addison Airport continues to evolve. New expansions are underway. This includes new facilities. These expansions will create even more aviation jobs in the Addison area. The airport is a vital part of the community.

So, next time you’re near Addison Airport, take a moment to appreciate its impact. It’s a place where aviation history meets modern innovation. It’s a testament to the dreams that take flight every day.
