“A truck garden in a mud hole.” That’s how famed landscape architect Jens Jensen described Adams Park in the early 1900s. Can you imagine this serene greenspace as anything but a peaceful escape? In 1881, this triangular plot in Greater Grand Crossing was just that – a neglected lot. It was originally acquired by the City of Chicago from the community’s developer, Paul Cornell. Fast forward to 1907, Jensen, a member of the City’s Special Park Commission, took it upon himself to transform this “sorry-looking” space. He implemented proper drainage, laid substantial walks, and introduced trees and shrubbery. Eventually, the Commission added lush lawns, more trees, and a refreshing drinking fountain. Adams Park even served as a makeshift ice skating rink during the winters, with its depressed lawn flooding for skaters’ enjoyment. Today, Adams Park, gifted to the Chicago Park District in 1957, stands as a testament to Jensen’s vision. It’s a tranquil oasis for residents to enjoy a moment of respite amidst the bustling city.
