What if a throne wasn’t meant for royalty, but for everyday passersby? Here at the Ad Ephemeram Gloriam sculpture, that’s precisely the concept. This iron artwork, also known as “The Chair of Power”, sits humbly in Lisbon’s Alameda Park. Ad Ephemeram Gloriam invites us to pause and reflect. It was placed here in 2010 after the completion of metro expansion works. The park’s west side had been a construction site. But with the project’s end, grass returned, and so did art. Ad Ephemeram Gloriam isn’t just a quirky piece. It carries a powerful message about our fast-paced world. It beckons us to slow down. The sculpture is dedicated “to all who pass by and dare to stop”. Its creator, SAM, whose real name was Azavey Samuel Torres de Carvalho, was a fascinating figure. Although trained as a civil engineer, SAM dedicated his life to illustration and cartoons. His work often appeared in various journals, with his character Guard Ricardo becoming especially popular. So, next time you’re rushing past, take a moment to appreciate Ad Ephemeram Gloriam. Let it remind you that sometimes, the greatest power lies in simply stopping.
