Welcome to the Acelerador de Electrones. It is located in the Departamento de Ciencias Nucleares at the Escuela Politécnica Nacional in Quito. This special machine is unique in Ecuador and the countries along South America’s Pacific coast.
The Acelerador de Electrones began its journey in 1985. It was part of a project to explore peaceful uses for atomic energy in Ecuador. The International Atomic Energy Agency helped set it up. So what does the Acelerador de Electrones actually do? It uses electron beams to irradiate things. This process has several benefits. It can sterilize medical supplies. It was made in Russia. It can process up to 5 tons of product each day. That is a lot of medical supplies!

In 2015, the Acelerador de Electrones received an important license. It came from the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy. This license confirmed that the facility meets all safety requirements. Getting the license involved a lot of work. The lab staff, safety officers and the Nuclear Science Department all worked together. They reviewed documents, created new manuals and made necessary improvements.
