Established in 1898 the Accra Metropolitan District is a fascinating place. It’s one of Ghana’s 254 Metropolitan Municipal and Districts. It’s also among the 26 districts in the Greater Accra Region. The Accra Metropolitan District holds a special place in Ghana’s history. It has served as the nation’s capital since 1961. It’s also coterminous with the City of Accra.

The Accra Metropolitan District is made up of three sub-metropolitan districts. These are Ablekuma South Ashiedu Keteke and Okaikoi South. Ablekuma South is relatively small covering only 2.58 square kilometers. It’s home to communities like Korle Gonno Korle-Bu Chorkor Mamprobi and New Mamprobi. Ashiedu Keteke is another vital part of the district. It encompasses the Central Business District. It is the heart of Accra’s commercial activity. The area is densely populated. In 2010 it had 117525 people. Okaikoi South is the third sub-metropolitan district. It borders other municipal districts.
