Did Academia Sinica always call Taiwan its home? No. This esteemed institution, a beacon of knowledge and research in Taiwan, actually began its journey in mainland China. Founded in 1928 in Nanjing, it was a tumultuous time marked by the upheaval of the Chinese Civil War. In 1949, the institution faced a pivotal decision—to relocate to Taiwan with the Republic of China government or remain in mainland China. Most of the institutes chose to stay, eventually becoming part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Only the Institute of History and Philology made the move to Taiwan, a testament to the enduring power of history and culture. The Academia Sinica we see today, reborn in Taipei, stands as a testament to resilience and adaptation. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of immense challenges, the pursuit of knowledge can find new ground and flourish.
