Born in Virginia in 1761, John Abston was a young man when he enlisted in the Continental Army. He fought bravely in the Battle of Kings Mountain, a pivotal battle that proved a turning point in the American Revolution. After the war, Abston married and had children. After his wife passed, John moved with his son Jesse and Jesse’s family to Missouri. He then journeyed West with his son’s family to Texas. Tragically, Jesse died on the journey of pneumonia, and John Abston, heartbroken, settled in Collin County. He established a small family cemetery on land he and Jesse’s widow, Sarah purchased. John Abston, the Revolutionary War hero, was buried there in 1856. His grave was the first in the Abston Cemetery. The plaque informs us that John’s descendants still live in Collin County, preserving his memory and this vital legacy.
