Perhaps you’re wondering how Aberfeldie got its interesting name. It’s a story rooted in Scottish heritage and local history.

Aberfeldie, a charming suburb in Melbourne, lies just 8 km north-west of the city’s central business district. This lovely area is part of the City of Moonee Valley. Aberfeldie recorded a population of 3,925 residents in 2021.

Back in the day, a Scotsman named James Robertson owned a property here. This was around the corner of Aberfeldie Street and Park Crescent. He named his property Aberfeldie after Aberfeldy. That’s a town in Scotland. When the property was sold in 1888, the name stuck. It became the name of this suburb.

The boundaries of Aberfeldie are well-defined. Afton Street marks the western edge. Buckley Street forms the northern border. Waverley Street and Aberfeldie Park define the east. The Maribyrnong River shapes the southern boundary.

Community has always been important here. The Aberfeldie Bowls Club started in 1910. In 1928, the Aberfeldie Progress Association joined forces with other groups. They created the Northern Districts Progress Cricket Association. In 1944, the Aberfeldie Community Centre was formed. It supported various sports and social events.

The Aberfeldie Sports Club emerged from this community spirit. Founded in 1974, it became a hub for local sports. Australian Rules Football and cricket thrived here. The Aberfeldie Football Club joined the Essendon District Football League in 1951.

Families love Aberfeldie for its parks and sporting facilities. The Maribyrnong River adds to its appeal. You’ll find a mix of houses here. Inter-war California bungalows stand alongside post-war homes.

Several schools serve the area. Aberfeldie Primary School is a government school. Our Lady of Nativity and Resurrection School are Catholic primary schools. Ave Maria College is a Catholic secondary school.

Getting around Aberfeldie is easy. Several bus routes operate here. They connect Aberfeldie to Essendon, Moonee Ponds, and other key locations.

Interestingly, Aberfeldie was once part of Moonee Ponds and Essendon. It officially became a suburb in 1998. The suburb has a linear park along the Maribyrnong River. There’s also Aberfeldie Park and sports facilities. Shops can be found along Buckley Street.

In 1973, an important event took place here. Cardinal Karol Wojtyla consecrated the Polish Catholic church. He later became Pope John Paul II. The church is located on the corner of Alma Street and Aberfeldie Street. James Robertson built his Aberfeldie residence around 1865. It stood on the western side of Aberfeldie Street. The property extended to Combermere Street. The Aberfeldie Estate was subdivided in 1888.

Aberfeldie offers a blend of history, community, and natural beauty. It is a great place to live.
