Can a church rise from a drying green? At Abbeyhill Baptist Church, it did. This unique Edinburgh landmark, tucked away on Elgin Terrace, has a story as singular as its architecture. Abbeyhill Baptist Church wasn’t always a sanctuary. The land it occupies was once the drying green for the tenements on Elgin Terrace. In 1895, a group of friends gathered in a shop at 24 Easter Road. They dreamed of a new Baptist church. This dream took root, moving from building to building until 1902. That year, they acquired the drying green and erected their own church. The unusual shape of Abbeyhill Baptist Church is a direct result of its origins on the oddly shaped drying green. The church’s flat roof even became a new drying green for the tenement flats. The first service echoed through the new space on November 30, 1902. Abbeyhill Baptist Church deepened its roots in the community in 1934. The church purchased the adjacent Brunswick Road Dance Halls, occupying the tenement’s ground floor. For over a century, Abbeyhill Baptist Church has been more than just a place of worship. It’s a vital thread in the Abbeyhill community. From Sunday services to social activities, the church has served its neighbors. It has hosted the Bethany Night Shelter. It has nourished bodies and souls with lunch clubs. It has fostered community through parent and toddler groups, art clubs, and after-school programs. Abbeyhill Baptist Church is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. It’s a place where history whispers from the stones and the spirit of service continues to flourish.
