Amidst the urban tapestry of Manila, the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat stands as a testament to faith and resilience. The Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat, also known as Manila Abbey, isn’t just a beautiful structure. It holds within its walls a story that intertwines with the very fabric of the Philippines. The Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat was founded in 1895 by Benedictine monks who journeyed from Spain. Their arrival marked not only a spiritual mission, but also a historical turning point. It was the twilight of the Spanish colonial era, a time of both great tradition and impending change. Dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat, the abbey became a beacon of hope and constancy amidst uncertainty. The abbey’s story is deeply connected to San Beda University, which operates on its grounds. The monks, belonging to the Philippine Pro-Province of the Subiaco Cassinese Congregation, found themselves navigating a new landscape with the arrival of American occupation in 1898. The loss of financial support from Spain forced them to adapt. They recognized the need for education and, in 1901, established San Beda College. This institution, named after the Venerable Bede, an English Benedictine scholar, became a testament to their commitment to learning and faith. The college’s initial location on Arlegui Street soon proved too small. The monks sought a new home for their growing community, and in 1909, moved to Mendiola Street, where the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat stands today. The abbey church itself is a masterpiece of architectural design. The cornerstone was laid in 1925, and the church was completed and consecrated in 1926. Its neo-Gothic exterior and neo-Baroque interior, adorned with breathtaking paintings by Dom Lesmes López and Brother Salvador Alberich, create a space of profound beauty and reverence. The paintings, completed between 1931 and 1939, depict allegorical figures of virtues, theology, and the church, narrating the story of faith in vivid color. The Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith, the pursuit of knowledge, and the resilience of the human spirit. It has witnessed the changing tides of history, from Spanish colonial rule to American occupation and beyond, and continues to serve as a spiritual and educational center in the heart of Manila.
