What if I told you about a man whose simple cloak became his legacy? Right here, beside the Toptaş Mosque, rests the Abacı Dede Türbesi. Abacı Dede Türbesi is a humble structure, a four-walled, brick building with a simple wooden roof. It stands on Abacı Dede Street, where it meets Toptaşı Meydan Street. Abacı Dede, a beloved whirling dervish of Üsküdar, known for his ecstatic trances and spiritual insights, passed away in 1704. He was laid to rest on this very spot. The tomb, Abacı Dede Türbesi, was later constructed. A popular tale claims it was commissioned by Nevşehirli Ibrahim Pasha, who was deeply moved by the saint’s reputation. The Abacı Dede Türbesi is a testament to this simple yet powerful figure. You can see how simply constructed it is, a stark contrast to the grand tombs of sultans and pashas. The tomb has been recently restored by the locals, demonstrating the community’s reverence for Abacı Dede. Inside the Abacı Dede Türbesi, you’ll find a brick sarcophagus, added later. It is covered with cement. On top sits a wooden chest, and on that, a simple velvet cloth. At the head of the sarcophagus, stands Abacı Dede’s tombstone. This slender, four-cornered stone, features a carved turban at the top, reminiscent of the headdress worn during the reign of Sultan Selim. The stone dates back to 1116 (1704-5). In front of it lies a smaller tombstone. It belongs to Ümmühan Hatun. She is believed to be Abacı Dede’s mother. Her stone is dated 1094 (1683). Now, about that cloak. “Abacı” translates to “cloak maker”. It is said that Dede either crafted and sold cloaks made from a thick, woolen fabric called “aba”, or that he simply possessed a cherished aba that he wore throughout his life. Local legend even connects him to the saying, “I have my cloak, I’ll throw it down / Wherever it may be, I’ll lie down.” This saying speaks to the dervish’s humility and detachment from material possessions. The aba symbolizes a life dedicated to spiritual pursuits. A caretaker lovingly maintains Abacı Dede Türbesi, keeping it impeccably clean. It’s a peaceful sanctuary in the bustling city. A single step leads into the tomb. Across from it, everyday life continues. There’s a running water tap and a small grocery store just across the street. This juxtaposition highlights the integration of the sacred into the everyday lives of the people of Üsküdar. Abacı Dede Türbesi stands as a humble tribute to a man who found greatness in simplicity. It serves as a quiet reminder of the spiritual legacy that lives on in the heart of Üsküdar.
