Aarhus Skøjtehal

The Aarhus Skøjtehal, also known as the Aarhus Ice Hall, was a long time in the making. Locals dreamt of an indoor rink for decades. It all started with an outdoor ice rink built in 1964 that quickly became a beloved part of the city. But people longed for a place to skate, even when the weather wasn’t cooperating. The first indoor skating rinks in Denmark were built in Røddovre and Gladsaxe in 1962. Aarhus, however, saw its first indoor rink in 1973 when the Aarhus Skøjtehal opened its doors. The building was designed by architect Jørgen Absalonsen and cost 10 million kroner to build. The Aarhus Skøjtehal offered space for not only public skating and hockey but also figure skating and curling. It became a hub for the community, where families and friends could enjoy the thrill of gliding across the ice. Unfortunately, the opening of the Aarhus Skøjtehal coincided with the first energy crisis, which led to limited open hours. People loved the new space. Despite the challenges, the Aarhus Skøjtehal served as a testament to the enduring love Aarhusians had for all things skating. It became a place where generations came together to make memories on the ice. The Aarhus Skøjtehal may be gone now, but its legacy lives on in the hearts of the people who grew up skating there.
