Picture this a grand two-story house on Nørre Allé. This is the home of Aarhus Islamisk Menighed. It’s more than just a building. It’s a center of faith and community.
Aarhus Islamisk Menighed is a religious society primarily for Sunni Muslims. Sunni Islam is the largest branch of Islam. Estimates suggest that 85-90% of Muslims worldwide are Sunni. The primary sources of religious knowledge are the Quran and the Sunnah. The Sunnah refers to the traditions and practices of Prophet Muhammad.
This particular house on Nørre Allé has a fascinating history. It wasn’t always a mosque. Before Aarhus Islamisk Menighed was established other groups resided here. For example Aarhus Ungdoms- og Kulturforening a youth and cultural association was located on the ground floor. This association focused on social interaction among young people.
In the early years a growing group of primarily older members expressed a desire for a religious community. Their wish was to create a place where they could gather in faith. In 1989 their dream came true. Aarhus Islamisk Menighed was founded.
Today the mosque serves a large community. Approximately 80 members pay dues. However a far greater number of non-dues-paying individuals regularly use the mosque’s facilities. The mosque’s doors remain open to all. It is a true testament to the spirit of community and the importance of faith.
