Aarhus Bugt: did you know that this body of water is more than just a pretty view? Aarhus Bugt or Aarhusbugten as it is known locally is a Danish body of water. It sits just off the coast of Aarhus in East Jutland.
Aarhus Bugt spans approximately 610 square kilometers. The bay is relatively shallow. Its depth increases from west to east ranging from 14 to 18 meters.
Let’s talk boundaries. Kalø Vig marks the northern edge of Aarhus Bugt. Sletterhage and Helgenæs define its eastern limits. To the south lie Samsø and Tunø. The East Jutland coast around Norsminde completes the western border of Aarhus Bugt.
Water exchange with the Kattegat Sea primarily occurs through a deep channel. This channel runs along Helgenæs. Here you will find depths plunging down to 50 meters. In the southern part of Aarhus Bugt a series of shallows exists. These are Norsminde Flak, Wulffs Flak, and Mejlflak. Together with Tunø Knob, Tunø, and Samsø these shallows create a barrier. They prevent a direct connection to the Bælthavet.
There’s an interesting tidbit about a planned wind farm. In 2013 the Havvind Aarhus Bugt project started. It was intended for the Mejlflak area in Aarhus Bugt. This sits between Tunø, Samsø, and Helgenæs. However in September 2015 construction was postponed indefinitely. The energy company NRGi deemed it unprofitable.
Unfortunately Aarhus Bugt has faced environmental challenges. The most extensive and prolonged oxygen depletion in recent history hit the inner Danish waters in 2002. Aarhus Bugt was severely affected. Studies by DMU in November 2002 and March 2003 revealed significant damage. This damage impacted the bottom fauna particularly in Kalø Vig and the western parts of the bay. Fortunately amateur footage from the summer of 2015 shows recovery. The bottom fauna and flora have re-established themselves in vulnerable areas.
For years Aarhus Bugt received untreated wastewater. Harmful nutrients flowed in from agriculture, industry, and households. These excess nutrients polluted the environment. They caused eutrophication. Since Aarhus Municipality opened Marselisborg Renseanlæg in 1990 only treated wastewater has been released into Aarhus Bugt. However treatment doesn’t remove nutrients. According to data from 2005 Aarhus Bugt still received significant amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus annually. Agriculture contributed a large percentage of these nutrients.
The good news is that nitrogen runoff has decreased significantly since the late 1970s. Phosphorus runoff has also seen a major reduction. An extensive water purification project by Aarhus Vand has further improved water quality. The Marselisborg Renseanlæg even extracts phosphorus and produces electricity.
Historically Aarhus Bugt saw considerable industrial activity. This included pumping sand and gravel and local fishing. These activities have declined significantly since the mid-1970s. In 2006 most of Norsminde Flak was pumped up. It was used for the expansion of Aarhus Harbor. Cod and flatfish were the primary catches. Aarhus Fiskerihavn ranked as the sixth largest fishing port in Denmark in the mid-1960s. Eel fishing was also prevalent using eel weirs. These were common along Knebel Vig, Begtrup Vig, and south of Norsminde. Eelgrass once thrived along the coast. Today it has almost disappeared.
Aarhus Bugt stands as a testament to both natural beauty and human impact. Its story includes environmental challenges, industrial shifts, and ongoing efforts towards sustainability.
