What if I told you that just south of Timmendorfer Strand lies a realm where nature reigns supreme? This is the Aalbeek-Niederung. It is a sanctuary born from the embrace of land and sea. Aalbeek-Niederung is a Naturschutzgebiet or nature reserve. It is a testament to Schleswig-Holstein’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage.

Established in 1984, the Aalbeek-Niederung spans approximately 349 hectares. This protected area is not just a local treasure. It is also recognized as an FFH-Gebiet and EU-Vogelschutzgebiet. This dual designation underscores its importance on both a national and international scale.

The Aalbeek-Niederung owes its existence to the fascinating geological history of the region. It sits in the lowlands between Timmendorfer Strand and the Hemmelsdorfer See. This unique landscape arose from the gradual silting up of the Hemmelsdorfer See. The lake itself is a relic of the last ice age. It was once a fjord connected to the Baltic Sea.

Several streams meander through the Aalbeek-Niederung. The Aalbeek and Twerbek rivers drain the Hemmelsdorfer See into the Baltic Sea. These waterways sustain the rich biodiversity of the area. They also contribute to the dynamic interplay between land and water.

Extensive grassland dominates the Aalbeek-Niederung. It creates a verdant tapestry. Hedgerows and tree lines punctuate this landscape. Some trees are pollarded willows. Small islands of oak-hornbeam forests add further diversity. Alder and ash swamp forests thrive along the banks of the Hemmelsdorfer See. They also thrive along the Aalbeek and Twerbek. These forests possess an alluvial forest character. The northeastern part of the Hemmelsdorfer See falls within the nature reserve.

The Aalbeek-Niederung lies only a little above sea level. This makes it susceptible to flooding. High tides in the Baltic Sea and prolonged elevated water levels in the Hemmelsdorfer See can inundate the area. These periodic floods play a vital role in shaping the ecology of the Aalbeek-Niederung. The grasslands provide habitat for various meadow birds. Together with the Hemmelsdorfer See, it serves as a crucial resting and wintering area for many bird species.

A reed belt of common reed and narrow-leaved cattail extends up to 50 meters wide along the shore of the Hemmelsdorfer See. A narrow swamp forest of black alder and various willow species borders it inland. Downy birch, alder buckthorn, and black currant also grow here. The grasslands host sedges. You can find species like carnation sedge and tufted sedge. Other plants include iris, marsh marigold, and meadow buttercup. You might also spot yellow meadow-rue, bittersweet nightshade, and bitter-cress. Also look out for purple loosestrife, great sorrel, and marsh fern. Many orchids thrive here. These include broad-leaved marsh orchid and flesh-colored orchid.

The Aalbeek-Niederung teems with insect life. Mayflies, stoneflies, and various mosquito species abound. These include midge and blackfly. The area is also an important habitat for dragonflies and butterflies.

The reed beds provide refuge for birds. Western marsh harrier, Eurasian bittern, reed warbler, and sedge warbler all live here. Kingfisher, red-backed shrike, golden oriole, Savi’s warbler, and common rosefinch also call this place home. Bearded reedling, Eurasian penduline tit, and garganey also reside here. White-tailed eagle uses the area as a foraging habitat. The Hemmelsdorfer See is a stopover for migratory birds. Greylag goose, great crested grebe, and various ducks rest here. These ducks include gadwall, northern shoveler, common pochard, tufted duck, and ferruginous duck.

Several hiking trails traverse the Aalbeek-Niederung. An observation tower near the northern shore of the Hemmelsdorfer See provides panoramic views. You can see the nature reserve, the Hemmelsdorfer See, and parts of the Bay of Lubeck. The Aalbeek-Niederung borders the Bundesstrasse 76 to the north. Otherwise, agricultural land surrounds it. To the northeast lies the Niendorf Bird Park. A golf course sits to the southeast.

As you leave this place, remember the delicate balance of nature that defines the Aalbeek-Niederung. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving these precious habitats for generations to come.
