Behold the A Família sculpture. Three bronze figures stand before you. They are hyper-realistic. They depict a family a mother a father and two children.
The A Família sculpture is the work of Angolan sculptor Jorge Melicio. He created this stunning piece. It’s located in Lisbon’s Fernando Pessoa Garden. The A Família sculpture was unveiled on July 17 2001. The president of the São João de Deus parish was there. So was the city council’s environmental affairs representative.
Notice the detail. The mother sits in a chair. She gazes over her shoulder. One child sits on a bench. He holds a butterfly. The father teaches the other child to ride a bicycle. Melicio’s skill is evident. He captures the intimate moments of family life.
Melicio was born in Lobito Angola in 1957. He studied at the António Arroio Decorative Arts High School. He also went to Lisbon’s University of Fine Arts. He now lives and works in Lisbon. His work spans many mediums including bronze stone ceramics drawing and resin.
The A Família sculpture is just one of his many public works. His art is displayed in Portugal Italy France Mexico Brazil Romania Russia England Iraq the USA Palestine Cuba Libya and Spain. He even worked with the master sculptor Cardenas. Cardenas was a restorer at the Brooklyn Museum in New York.
This A Família sculpture is more than just art. It’s a window into family life. It’s a testament to Melicio’s talent. It is a beautiful addition to Lisbon’s landscape. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry. Let the A Família sculpture’s story resonate with you.
