A beacon of knowledge and learning stands before us, a testament to the unwavering spirit of Elmhurst College, now Elmhurst University. This is the A C Buehler Library, a sprawling monument to the power of information. The library was built in 1971 with the support of Albert C Buehler, a prominent businessman and trustee. This towering structure, a cornerstone of the university’s east side, has served generations of students and faculty. The Buehler Library wasn’t always this grand, though. It started with a simple reading room in the basement of Old Main. In 1912, an official library was established in Irion Hall, where tables are still in use today. From 1922 to 1971, a free-standing Memorial Library served the campus, with two wings added in 1958. It was an incredible journey through time, leading to the modern A C Buehler Library we see today. It’s not just about books, though. The Buehler Library houses a collection of Chicago Imagist art, showcasing the vibrant cultural heritage of the city. While many libraries focus on the past, the A C Buehler Library also holds a growing collection of student works, a testament to the creativity of the next generation. Today, the A C Buehler Library stands as a symbol of both enduring history and promising potential.
