From the concrete pavement outside the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art rises 6 TIMES LEFT. It’s a sculpture, part of Antony Gormley’s “6 Times” series. The series was commissioned in 2009 by the National Galleries of Scotland. 6 TIMES LEFT stands as a silent observer in the Water of Leith. This figure is one of four placed within the river. These sculptures invite contemplation on our connection to time and the natural world. The Water of Leith flows from the Pentland Hills to Leith Docks. It was once vital to Edinburgh’s industry and trade. During the Industrial Revolution, the river powered mills along its banks. These mills produced paper, flour, and textiles. Today, these mills stand abandoned. The Water of Leith now thrives with flora and fauna. 6 TIMES LEFT, made of cast iron, reflects this blend of nature and human impact. The sculpture bears visible marks from its creation. These marks, along with the rust slowly forming on its surface, speak to the passage of time.
