Distant echoes of rural life linger here in 50. Yıl Mahallesi. This vibrant Istanbul neighborhood wasn’t always a part of the sprawling metropolis. It started as something much smaller. Let’s uncover the story of 50. Yıl Mahallesi.

Its story began in 1952. Aziz Paşa’s grandchildren sold their Sultan Çiftliği estate. They divided it among 110 people. This marked the initial foundation of what would become 50. Yıl Mahallesi. Earlier this area belonged to Cebeci village. Then in 1963, a part was connected to Gaziosmanpaşa after its separation from Eyüp. Another section was linked to Bakırköy.

Before the population exchange, Greeks inhabited Cebeci. Due to the exchange, the Greeks relocated to Greece. Simultaneously Turks from Greece settled in Cebeci. This makes 50. Yıl Mahallesi a settlement with deep historical roots.

50. Yıl Mahallesi became associated with Gaziosmanpaşa. It stretched across a large area towards today’s Sultançiftliği neighborhood. In 1983, it gained its own identity by separating from Cebeci. It finally obtained autonomous status.

In the 1970s, the area saw its initial development. The 1980s brought significant attention. Turgut Özal selected 50. Yıl Mahallesi as a pilot zone during his time as prime minister. The plan aimed to create a model settlement. Infrastructure was to be completed before any buildings. Subsequent governments did not continue the project. The neighborhood evolved like any other. Mehmet Polat became the first head of the 50. Yıl Mahallesi.

People migrated from Anatolia to Istanbul. They left their cultural marks in 50. Yıl Mahallesi. Over time the neighborhood flourished. It expanded so much that a portion split off. This became the neighboring Uğur Mumcu neighborhood.

Education in 50. Yıl Mahallesi blossomed. The 50. Yıl primary school opened in the 1980s. Later Kaşgarlı Mahmut school enriched the area. Melahat Öztoprak and Orhangazi primary schools also joined.

Several mosques serve the community. These include Fevzi Çakmak, Bilali Habeşi, Aksa, Emir Sultan and Ravza mosques.

Modernization has changed 50. Yıl Mahallesi. Multi-story buildings altered its character. Urban sprawl began to diminish green spaces. Despite these changes 50. Yıl Mahallesi retains its charm.

Adjacent to 50. Yıl Mahallesi lie industrial sites. Sanko auto industry site is here. Gamas furniture site is also nearby. G.O.Paşa chandelier and small industry sites add to the mix. These sites boosted local industry. The population grew significantly in recent years. It increased seven to eight times compared to a decade earlier.

Today 50. Yıl Mahallesi is a testament to Istanbul’s dynamic growth. It is a blend of its humble beginnings and modern transformation. As you explore its streets remember its journey. This neighborhood carries echoes of the past. It embraces the present with open arms.
