Across the Danube, the 4th district of Budapest, Újpest, beckons. Újpest translates to “New Pest”. This district’s story began not with grandeur, but with a simple shoe factory. In 1835, Isaac Lowy, a Jewish entrepreneur, dreamt of moving his factory to Pest. Denied a permit due to his faith, he envisioned a new town. Lowy purchased land north of Pest from the Károlyi nobles. His deed enshrined religious freedom, self-governance, and the right to conduct business. By 1838, Újpest was a small community of 13 Jewish families. Soon, Christians joined them, drawn by the promise of opportunity. The 4th district grew quickly. It attracted industry, boosting both its development and population. This industrial heritage is visible in landmarks like the State Department Store and the Wolfner Leather Factory. Újpest even houses Hungary’s largest complex of panel buildings, a testament to its rapid expansion. But Újpest is more than just industry. The heart of Újpest boasts architectural gems. The eclectic-Secessionist City Hall, built in 1900, once served as a courthouse and prison. Behind it, St. Stephen’s Square and the Queen of Skies main parish church stand as testaments to the district’s diverse character. Further afield, the Újpest Water Tower, a district symbol, punctuates the skyline. A poignant reminder of Újpest’s history is the Holocaust memorial next to the Neolog Synagogue. This memorial, with its narrative reliefs and wall of names, honors the more than 12,000 Jewish residents deported and killed during World War II. The memorial stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of the community. Today, Újpest FC, founded in the district in 1885, carries the district’s name and spirit. The team plays at the Szusza Ferenc Stadium, a gathering place for passionate fans. Újpest, a district born from a dream of freedom and opportunity, continues to evolve. It stands as a vibrant blend of industrial heritage, architectural beauty, and poignant memories, a testament to the enduring human spirit.
