Have you ever wondered about a building shaped like the Banaue Rice Terraces? Right here in the Ortigas business district stands the 45 San Miguel Building. Its distinctive ziggurat form dominates the skyline. The 45 San Miguel Building, also known as the San Miguel Corporation Head Office Complex, was completed in 1984. It was a landmark project by the Mañosa brothers, architects renowned for their innovative designs. They drew inspiration from the Banaue Rice Terraces, seeking to create one of the Philippines’ first green buildings. The 45 San Miguel Building was designed with energy conservation in mind. Its north-south orientation maximizes natural light. No part of the interior is more than 15 meters from a window, minimizing the need for artificial lighting. The slanted windows, along with angled sun breakers inspired by nipa huts, reduce glare and heat gain. The building’s perimeter features continuous planters. These contribute to the aesthetics and functional intent. The original plan was for the sunshades to hold solar panels and for the planters to have a sensor-aided irrigation system. Unfortunately, these technologies weren’t viable in 1979 when the project began. The landscape architect, IP Santos, complemented the building’s green design. He incorporated ponds, pocket gardens, and a jogging track into the six-hectare complex. Santos’s innovative “tropical” parking layout provides shade for vehicles and screens them from view. An “invisible” fence of bougainvillea and agaves surrounds the site, offering a natural security barrier. The gate and entry portal also mirror the building’s ziggurat shape. Forty years later, the 45 San Miguel Building and its surrounding landscape remain remarkably well-maintained. This complex stands as a testament to the vision of its creators and the San Miguel Corporation’s commitment to sustainability. It’s a green oasis in the heart of a bustling business district.
