“Bridging the Drive” sounds like a daring mission doesn’t it? It was actually the motto for the international design competition that led to the creation of the 41st Street Pedestrian Bridge. The 41st Street Pedestrian Bridge links Bronzeville to the lakefront. Before it was built, residents had to travel more than a half mile to the nearest bridge. This made accessing the lakefront a real challenge. Lake Shore Drive and the train tracks were a significant barrier. The 41st Street Pedestrian Bridge changed all of that.
Opened in December 2018, the 41st Street Pedestrian Bridge offers a safe path over Lake Shore Drive and the Metra Electric/CN Railroad tracks. The 1,500-foot long bridge features twin inclined arches. These arches create graceful sweeping S-curves. This design is unique. The arches are inclined at 30 degrees from vertical. The deck rib curves on a 400-foot radius.
The 41st Street Pedestrian Bridge is not your typical symmetric arch bridge. Its arches have reverse curves. The center between the arches is seven feet higher than the ends. This adds to the bridge’s unique character.
Hillsdale Fabricators constructed the bridge. The steel structure weighs 676 tons. It was shipped to the site in 28 large pieces. Some pieces weighed as much as 40 tons. The team preassembled the bridge in five groups. This ensured a perfect fit in the field.
F.H. Paschen was the contractor for this complex project. The team erected a temporary bridge over the rail lines. This protected workers from the electric lines. It also minimized disruption to train traffic.
