Picture this. You are standing before 300 West Adams a Chicago landmark. This isn’t just any building. It’s a piece of Chicago history.

300 West Adams stands tall. It boasts 12 stories. Its Gothic Revival style is striking. Architectural terracotta cladding adorns its exterior. The building was completed in 1927. It’s a testament to the city’s architectural prowess. Its location is prime. It’s situated in the West Loop. The building is directly across from the Willis Tower. It’s near Union Station too. This prime location makes it a highly sought-after address.

Before 300 West Adams existed there was a warehouse. This was at the northwest corner of Adams and Franklin Streets. The Armour-Dole Grain Company originally built it. Later Carson Pirie Scott and Company used it as a wholesale store. The area underwent major changes. The building of Union Station in 1925 spurred redevelopment. Carson Pirie Scott had ambitious plans. They envisioned transforming their warehouse into a high-class office building. The initial plan involved remodeling the existing structure. It would remain six stories high. But their plans evolved. They decided to demolish the old warehouse completely. They would replace it with a brand new twelve-story office building.

Even before construction began the building had high demand. The U.S. Gypsum Co. the R.G. Dun & Co. the Transportation Freight Bureau and the General Chemical Co. all leased substantial space. The McLennan Construction Company built 300 West Adams. The project was completed swiftly by April 1 1927.

Today 300 West Adams stands as a symbol of Chicago’s growth and architectural legacy. It’s more than just an office building. It’s a piece of the city’s past a testament to its enduring spirit. This impressive structure has stood the test of time. It has witnessed significant changes in the city. Yet 300 West Adams remains. It serves as a reminder of Chicago’s vibrant past and its promising future. Its design and craftsmanship are exceptional. It is an example of the high-rise office building boom of the 1920s. In 2009 300 West Adams was designated a Chicago Landmark. Its significance is undeniable.
