The 24 Août 1944 Libération de Massy War memorial stands as a testament to the bravery of those who fought. The morning of August 24th 1944 found Massy’s residents anxious. Allied bombings in June had already claimed 60 lives. Now they saw enemy reinforcements arriving. The Germans were consolidating their positions. Six 88mm cannons were hidden. They stretched from the Quatre-Fourchettes crossroads to Petit Massy.

In the afternoon the Warabiot sub-group entered the town. A local resistance fighter Mr Madranges guided them. Other resistance members and firefighters seized the Kommandantur at the Château de Vilmorin. The battle was brutal. Light tanks Lodi and Marengo of the 501e RCC were hit by the 88mm cannons. One soldier 2e classe Mohamed Dahou died. Four others were seriously wounded.

Captain de Witasse sent the Eylau tank as reinforcement. Guided by the FFI it destroyed the anti-tank guns. Lieutenant Carage’s RMT section faced intense fire on Massy’s outskirts. Captain Buis of the 501e RCC cleverly infiltrated the town via narrow streets. His Sherman tank Elchingen destroyed an anti-tank gun. This was a crucial turning point in the battle.

Soon the Leclerc tanks secured the town with FFI support. The 24 Août 1944 Libération de Massy War memorial symbolizes this hard-fought victory.
