“Little Pest,” they called it. Kispest, the 19th district of Budapest. Its story is one of transformation from rural village to a vital part of Hungary’s capital.

Founded in 1871, Kispest began as a village. It bordered Pest and was named accordingly. Imagine a time when Kispest was outside the bustling city. Rural lands stretched where modern buildings now stand. From 1880 to 1990, Kispest’s population exploded from 1820 to over 72,000.

In 1950, Kispest officially became part of Greater Budapest. But before that, it saw conflict. Soviet troops clashed with locals in Kispest during the 1956 uprising. These streets witnessed history. The scars of those times are now woven into the district’s identity.

Between the 1960s and 1980s, Kispest changed dramatically. Large panel housing estates rose. These provided homes for around 33,000 people. It became one of Budapest’s largest housing projects.

Let’s talk about Wekerletelep. This charming suburb within Kispest boasts detached houses and green spaces. Sándor Wekerle, a Hungarian premier, inspired its name. Architect Károly Kós designed its iconic gateways based on Transylvanian style. Every May, Wekerle Days bring the community together with sports, concerts and family fun.

Getting around Kispest is easy. Metro Line 3 connects Kőbánya-Kispest and Határ út stations directly to the city center. Határ út station is one of the busiest. About 40,000 passengers pass through it daily.

Did you know Ferenc Puskás played for Kispest F.C. in the 1950s? Back then, it was called Kispest Honvéd FC. This district has a rich sporting history.

Kispest is twinned with several international cities. These include Krzeszowice in Poland and Pendik in Turkey. It also has ties to Smolyan in Bulgaria and Sombor in Serbia. Tășnad in Romania and Vrbovec in Croatia are also twin cities.

Today, Kispest is a dynamic part of Budapest. It balances industrial zones and peaceful neighborhoods. This district is also active in sports and culture. Kispest is more than just a district. It’s a community with a unique history. It’s a testament to growth and resilience.
