Their goal was to separate train traffic from the city streets, improving safety for everyone. The 18th Avenue Bridge has three bays. It’s made of reinforced concrete, with sturdy supports on the sides and in the middle. It stretches approximately 95 feet long and 32 feet wide. An 8-foot sidewalk runs along each side, providing safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists. Over the years, the 18th Avenue Bridge has shown its age. The deck, superstructure, and substructure all suffer from deterioration. However, the city of Minneapolis recognizes its importance. In 2026, the 18th Avenue Bridge will undergo renovations. These improvements will focus on enhancing safety and functionality for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Currently, temporary measures are in place. Traffic is limited to one lane, and vehicles weighing over 26 tons are prohibited. These restrictions ensure the bridge’s stability until the renovations are complete.
