From the ashes of a devastating fire, a phoenix rose. This phoenix is the 1812 Theatre. It stands before us, a testament to resilience and a vibrant hub of creativity. The 1812 Theatre’s story begins not here, but in a converted army hut in the 1940s. Back then, it was known as the Ferntree Gully Arts Society Repertory Players. The group performed to small audiences, sometimes just three people. Yet their passion burned bright. In 1968, the company moved to a larger, albeit dilapidated, hall in Lysterfield. The actors themselves renovated the space, transforming it into the intimate 1812 Theatre. Tragedy struck in 1972 when a fire destroyed everything. Undeterred, the company continued their season at Scoresby Hall. Just one month later, they began rebuilding in a derelict cinema on Rose Street. This is the building we stand before today. The 1812 Theatre was reborn in November 1972. Since then, this 1812 Theatre has thrived, hosting diverse plays, jazz nights, and even representing Australia at an international theatre festival in Monaco in 1985. Today, the 1812 Theatre is run by a board of directors. It continues to enrich the community with its productions, a vibrant testament to the enduring power of the arts.
