The 13th district officially crosses the Danube. It includes the famous Margit Sziget or Margaret Island. Its southern border follows the big ring road. Here it is called Szent István körút. It curves around with the tramlines across the river. It ends at the Margit Sziget tram stop. The district then runs up the river. It passes Óbudai Island. It reaches Újpesti vasúti híd or the Northern Rail bridge.
Did you know that the 13th district was once the traditional home of Budapest’s Jewish population? This history adds another layer to its rich tapestry. Today, the 13th offers a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. The Vígszínház or Comedy Theatre stands here. So does the Budapest Jazz Club. Szent István park provides green space. The 13th splits into two distinct areas. Újlipótváros is the inner section. It stretches from the big ring road to Hungária körút. It feels like a continuation of the city center. Angyalföld is the outer section. It fans out from Hungária körút. This is a traditional working-class area.
Getting around the 13th is relatively easy. The M3 metro line runs through the district. It has six stations from Nyugati to Gyöngyösi utca. The 4/6 tram runs 24/7. It travels along the big ring road. It has three stops in the 13th. These are from Nyugati to Jászai Mari tér. It goes halfway across the bridge to Margit Sziget. Further west, trams 1, 17, 19, and 41 run along Hungária körút. Tram 1 offers a quick trip to Hero Square. It also goes to the City Park and Széchenyi Thermal Baths.
Tram 2 and ferry 11/12 provide scenic routes. Tram 2 heads south along the riverbank. It offers stunning views of the Parliament and Budapest’s bridges. Ferry 11/12 zig-zags across the river to Jászai Mari tér. The journey takes about an hour.
Újlipótváros is popular with young families. Cafés and bars line Pozsonyi út. The area has a relaxed and warm feeling. Margaret Island and the City Park offer entertainment for children. Safe green spaces invite them to run around. Shopaholics can visit the West End City Centre mall. It offers hours of retail therapy with local and international brands.
