Towering above the Chicago River, a glistening skyscraper dominates the city skyline. This is 110 North Wacker, a modern marvel rising to a height of 817 feet. Completed in 2020, 110 North Wacker is the tallest all-commercial building in Chicago since Two Prudential Plaza in 1990.
The building stands on a site that was previously occupied by the GGP building. The GGP building, constructed in 1958, once served as the headquarters of Morton Salt. In 1997, it became the headquarters of General Growth Properties (GGP). However, the GGP building was demolished in 2018 to make way for the new 110 North Wacker.
Despite the demolition, a part of the GGP building’s facade was integrated into the base of the new building. This ensures a connection to the past while embracing the future. The building boasts a unique design that blends modern architecture with a touch of historical charm.
Bank of America has leased a significant portion of the office space in 110 North Wacker. The building also houses other notable tenants, including Perkins Coie. When it comes to construction, 110 North Wacker was quite a feat. An extensive use of barges helped to overcome the challenge of building on Wacker Drive, a multi-level roadway located along the Chicago River. To compensate for the riverwalk ordinance, which requires open air, the building was designed to overhang the riverwalk by 55 feet.
The building is a symbol of Chicago’s enduring skyline and its commitment to progress. The next time you find yourself in Chicago, take a moment to appreciate the architectural splendor of 110 North Wacker.
