Deep within a serene forest, Saginomori Shrine stands. This place has a history stretching back over 1000 years. It began in the Heian Period.

Saginomori means “Heron’s Forest.” Legend says a large heron flock lived here. Their white wings were a beautiful sight. These birds often appear in Japanese art. They symbolize good luck.

Originally, Saginomori Shrine was at Mount Hiei’s foot. It served as a guardian deity for seven villages. In 1689, it moved to its current location. The shrine is dedicated to Susanoo-no-mikoto. He is the younger brother of the sun goddess Amaterasu.

The shrine has a dance stage and a worship hall. They sit at the end of a long road up the hill. Majestic old trees surround the area.

An interesting feature is the stone bridge at the south entrance. It once belonged to Shugakuin Villa. Emperors used this bridge to cross the Otowa River. Now, anyone can use it as a shortcut to Manshu-in Temple.

The ema votive tablets are very cute. There is one for each of the twelve zodiac signs. People write their wishes on these tablets.

Saginomori Shrine is known for its yaegaki stone wall. Touching it is said to bring good relationships. Many hope for marital and romantic blessings. Yaegaki means eight stone’s wall. Eight is considered auspicious in Japan. It symbolizes wide spread good fortune.

The story of Susanoo-no-Mikoto is linked to this wall. In an old legend, the Yaegaki stone helped a goddess in crisis. Afterward, they fell in love.

Today, couples visit Saginomori Shrine seeking everlasting happiness. They hope for good connections and strong relationships.

The Sanyore Festival occurs annually on May 5. The shrine is usually quiet, with few tourists. In autumn, the leaves turn vibrant colors. The path to the temple becomes stunning.

Saginomori Shrine offers a peaceful escape. You can relax and enjoy the green and colored leaves. Many locals cherish this hidden gem.
