Shrouded in mist stands Shushozan Remains. A testament to Fukuoka’s rich past. This ancient mountaintop temple ruin whispers secrets of centuries gone by.

Shushozan Remains is a significant mid-age mountain temple ruin. It holds immense historical and cultural importance for the region. Designated as a national historical site in 2013 it stands as a silent observer of time’s passage. Originally known as Shushozan Myokoji Temple its existence has been known for a long time. Thorough research however only began in 2005. Investigations by the Hisayama Town Board of Education revealed its remarkably well-preserved condition. Joint research continues with the Fukuoka Prefecture Historical Materials Center. Mid-age ruins like this are rare. Few survived wartime fires. Limited development in Hisayama Town contributed to its survival. It stands as a unique testament to the international trade that thrived in Fukuoka during that era.

The remains reveal significant architectural features. Stone structures still exist in the main precinct. These include the five-room hall. Smaller chambers and tiled buildings remain. Pottery shards are found throughout the area. Interestingly the discovery of Qingbai porcelain is noteworthy. This porcelain was an early export from China. It is one of the earliest examples found in Japan according to the Hisayama Town Board of Education and Fukuoka Prefecture Historical Materials Center. In the western precinct lies what is believed to be a stone well. This well may have served the monks who once lived here. It also contains stone carvings. These are thought to be Buddhist carvings. The mountaintop area also has evidence of a residential area. A residential area may indicate a larger complex than previously thought.

The history of Shushozan Remains is equally captivating. Legend says that villagers fearing a wild boar from a Hakata ship cut off its head. They buried it in the sand. The boar’s head shone brightly. This became the origin story of Shushozan Myokoji Temple. In the early Heian period the temple complex grew substantially. More than 350 structures once existed. It flourished during the medieval period. Later it was maintained and supported by the international trade networks that made Hakata prosperous. It served as a welcoming facility for important traders. Its ruins represent the prosperity of a long-gone era.

The mountain path to Shushozan Remains opened in March 2002. It offers a challenging yet rewarding climb. From its summit you can enjoy panoramic views. Views stretch across Fukuoka Prefecture. Remember as you climb to appreciate the echoes of history. These echoes resonate from the stones under your feet. Shushozan Remains. A journey back in time awaits you.
