“Shanghai has a proper beach?” That’s right. I am talking about Jinshan City Beach. This isn’t just any beach. It’s a place where you can escape the city’s hustle. Jinshan City Beach offers sandcastles and volleyball. You can even have a BBQ.
Jinshan City Beach officially opened in 2006. It quickly became a 4A-level tourist attraction. The area covers 2.03 square kilometers of sea. It has a 5.1-kilometer protective dam. The beach is divided into east and west areas. Visitors can enjoy 160000 square meters of beach. There is also a 26000-square-meter swimming area.
Imagine yourself on the 1500-meter coastal promenade. It is a popular spot for wedding photography. Many couples come here from the Yangtze River Delta. You can enjoy many beach activities here. There is swimming and sand play. You can try motorboats and speedboats. Water bicycles are also available. Play beach volleyball or sand ping-pong. You can even play beach soccer. Fishing and horse-feeding are options too. Horse riding and go-karting are also available. Camping and self-service barbecues make it a full day of fun. Photographers will find many beautiful scenes.

The beach has specific operating hours. From March 1 to June 19 it is open 8:30 am-8:30 pm. September 11 to November 30 has the same hours. December 1 to February 28 it is open 8:30 am-5:30 pm. Swimming hours are June 20 to September 10, 8:30 am-9:30 pm.
Getting to Jinshan City Beach is easy. Metro Line 22, or the Jinshan Line, takes you there. Locals still call it Metro Line 22. The train departs from Shanghai South Railway Station. A ticket costs 10rmb. The fast train covers 56km in about 28 minutes. From Jinshan train station, it’s a short trip to the beach. You can walk, take a bus or grab a taxi.
There is a small entry fee for Jinshan City Beach. Prices vary by season and day. Regular prices are 10rmb on weekdays. It is 20rmb on weekends. Summer prices are higher. They are 30rmb on weekdays. It is 50rmb on weekends.
While swimming is restricted to knee-deep wading you can still enjoy the water. The beach is clean and well-maintained. You can rent a grill for 200rmb. This includes coals. Bringing your own food and drinks is allowed. Boat rental is 50rmb for 30 minutes. Volleyball courts are available for 100rmb for 90 minutes. This includes ball rental. Beach bike rental is 10rmb with no time limit. Riding a bike on the sand is challenging.
If you want to explore more visit the Fishing Village. It’s known as “The Last Fishing Village in Shanghai”. You can walk there or take a short taxi or bus ride. The fishing village has bridges coffee shops and street snacks. You will also find trinkets and guesthouses.
