Perhaps, the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane led you to this very spot in Fukuoka. This is the \u91d1\u639b\u5929\u6e80\u5bae. Though smaller than some of the grander shrines dedicated to Tenjin, its history is no less significant.

But who was Sugawara no Michizane? He was a scholar, poet, and statesman of the Heian period. Michizane rose to become Minister of the Right. Jealous rivals orchestrated his exile to Dazaifu in Kyushu. After his death, calamities struck the capital. People believed it was Michizane’s vengeful spirit. To appease him, he was deified as Tenjin, the god of scholarship.

Tenjin shrines, also known as Tenmangu, honor Sugawara no Michizane. Students and scholars visit these shrines seeking blessings. They pray for success in their studies and intellectual endeavors. \u91d1\u639b\u5929\u6e80\u5bae enshrines not only Tenjin, but also a water deity and Daikokuten.

Osaka Tenmangu, founded in 949, became a significant center for Tenjin worship. The annual Tenjin Matsuri is a vibrant celebration. It features processions, boat parades, and fireworks. During the Edo period, Osaka Tenmangu thrived as a place of learning and worship. Even haiku poet Matsuo Basho paid homage to Sugawara no Michizane here.

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine was built in 947 to appease Michizane’s spirit. The grounds are filled with plum trees. The Plum Blossom Festival is held on February 25.
