Hidden amongst the bustling streets of Shanghai, lies Zou Rong’s tomb, a poignant reminder of a young revolutionary’s fervor and sacrifice. Zou Rong’s tomb isn’t just a gravesite. It’s a testament to a life tragically cut short, a life dedicated to the pursuit of a free and modern China. Zou Rong, a Sichuan native, burned brightly for a brief but impactful 20 years. His powerful words, published in 1903 in his book “The Revolutionary Army,” ignited a firestorm of revolutionary sentiment. His impassioned critique of the Qing Dynasty and his vision for a new China landed him in jail in the Shanghai International Settlement. He tragically died in prison in 1905, but his legacy continued to inspire. Zou Rong’s tomb has a history as turbulent as the times in which he lived. Initially, his body was laid to rest in a desolate potter’s field, marked only by a small stone inscribed with the alias “Zhou Rong.” His friend, Liu Jiping, determined to give his comrade a proper burial, embarked on a covert mission to locate the unmarked grave. With the help of an old prison guard, he found the stone and secretly retrieved Zou Rong’s remains. Under the cover of darkness, Liu Jiping and a few trusted companions transported the body by boat to Liu’s family property in Huating Town. There, they buried Zou Rong beside the family’s yellow leaf cottage, a spot chosen by Liu’s wife. Following the Xinhai Revolution, Sun Yat-sen, recognizing Zou Rong’s significant contribution to the revolutionary cause, posthumously awarded him the title of “Grand Marshal of the Army.” Zou Rong’s tomb underwent renovations in 1923, further solidifying its status as a place of reverence. Sadly, during the Cultural Revolution, Zou Rong’s tomb was destroyed. Yet, even in destruction, his spirit lived on. In 1981, the tomb was painstakingly reconstructed using the original materials, though its location was shifted to the north side of Huating Road for preservation. Zou Rong’s tomb, as it stands today, features a circular mound covering the grave, a stone screen standing guard at the rear, and two stone pavilions flanking the sides. These pavilions house the original tombstone and epitaph, silent witnesses to the tumultuous journey of this young revolutionary’s final resting place. The tomb, surrounded by evergreen pine and cypress trees, offers a peaceful space for reflection. It serves as a poignant reminder of Zou Rong’s sacrifice, his dream of a modern China etched in stone.
