“Lost, then found,” a Hiroshima resident once murmured about Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine. This shrine, nestled within the Hiroshima Castle grounds, holds a story as resilient as the city itself. Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine, originally founded in 1869, served as a place of mourning for the Hiroshima-Han victims of the Boshin War. Its initial location was in Futabanosato, Hiroshima. Later, in 1934, the shrine was relocated to the site where Hiroshima Municipal Stadium currently stands. The shrine’s name officially became Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine in 1939. Tragically, like much of Hiroshima, the atomic bombing in 1945 destroyed the shrine. Only one of its three torii gates withstood the blast. Remarkably, the citizens of Hiroshima rallied together. Through their generous donations, Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine was reborn in 1965 within the protective embrace of Hiroshima Castle’s walls. Today, Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine stands as a symbol of remembrance and renewal. It’s a cherished location for celebrating traditional events like Hatsumōde and Shichi-Go-San. The shrine’s journey mirrors Hiroshima’s own path from devastation to revitalization. It serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring spirit of both the city and its people.
