Perhaps you have heard about Hiroshima’s rebirth. Today we explore a place reflecting resilience. This is Nishifukuji Temple.
Nishifukuji Temple stands as a testament to Hiroshima’s enduring spirit. It is a place of quiet contemplation. The temple’s history stretches back centuries. It has survived war and natural disasters.
Founded in 1501 Nishifukuji Temple has a rich history. It began as a Shingon sect temple named Ryuge-in. Miura Hyogo-no-kami established it as a family temple.
In 1598, a significant change occurred. The temple was converted to Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. This was through the efforts of Priest Genkaku. The temple then became known as Keishin-in.
Later Nishifukuji Temple moved to its current location in Nishi Ward. This move marked another chapter in its long history.
The temple’s main hall dates back to 1718. However it underwent significant renovations during the Meiji era. This ensured its preservation for future generations.
The atomic bombing in 1945 caused damage to Nishifukuji Temple. A typhoon in 1991 further deteriorated the structure. These events led to extensive repairs in 1995. The main hall was renovated. Interior and exterior decorations were restored.
In 2005 further renovations took place. These included repairs to the temple grounds and gates. The north gate which collapsed in a 2004 typhoon was rebuilt. An altar was reconstructed as well.
Today Nishifukuji Temple is led by Priest Shodo Kitakoji. He is the seventeenth generation of priests. The temple continues to serve the community.
Nishifukuji Temple offers various annual events. On January 1st the temple celebrates the New Year. From January 14th to 15th, it holds the Go-Shoe忌法要 service.
In March the temple observes the spring equinox. In April the Eitai-kyo 法要 service takes place. On May 20th the Bukkyo Fujinkai holds its general meeting.
Nishifukuji Temple holds Hatsusando on May 21st. In July the temple conducts a memorial service. This service honors war dead. It also includes a Mother and Child evening.
The autumn equinox service is in September. In October the temple hosts the Saiyoza寄席 a Rakugo performance. Also in October is the Asoka meeting.
From December 2nd to 4th Nishifukuji Temple observes the Hounko 講法要 service. On December 31st the temple holds the New Year’s Eve service.
Nishifukuji Temple is accessible via public transport. It is a 15-minute walk from Mukainada Station. It is also a short walk from local bus stops.
The temple provides facilities including a parking lot. It can accommodate over 100 people. It offers a mortuary and placement facilities. Social funerals are possible here.
