West Jokyo Temple stands before you. Its history stretches back centuries. Originally it wasn’t here. The temple’s story begins far away. In 1841 a small building existed in Kobatake. This was the Afuku Kannon-do temple. Years later in 1879 this structure was moved. It became the old main hall of West Jokyo Temple. This new location was Kobatake.

During wartime people sought refuge. They found it in nearby community buildings. These shelters were built in the hills. After the war the population grew. Many settled in Kobatake near West Jokyo Temple. This temple became a center of solace. It offered comfort to those who survived.

The temple’s present main hall is newer. It was built in 1916. Years of dedication went into its construction. It replaced an older hall destroyed by war.
