“A garden of whispers,” the old woman murmured, her eyes fixed on the vibrant blossoms of the 牡丹园. This is 牡丹园. It rests quietly in the southwest corner of Shanghai Botanical Garden. East of the aquatic plant area, north of the water amusement park, it faces the Osmanthus Garden across the road. The 牡丹园 first took root in 1978. It sprawls across 3.4 hectares. The land undulates gently, creating a natural, harmonious layout. The garden designers envisioned a space dominated by the peony family, interspersed with members of the bean family. This clever combination results in a rich tapestry of plant species, layered distinctly. Today, the 牡丹园 nurtures over 120 plant species. Tree and shrub peonies reign supreme. For easy viewing of flowers, foliage, and fruit, the garden uses groupings and clusters to create distinct wooded areas. These include the Moon Season Garden, the Magnolia Grove, the Plum Blossom Grove, the Peach Blossom Grove, the Begonia Grove, the Camellia Grove, the Crape Myrtle Grove, the Cedar Grove, and the Shade Grove. Each grove boasts a unique flowering season, varying in length and alternating with each other, ensuring a continuous bloom throughout the four seasons. Here in the 牡丹园, time seems to slow down. The air is thick with the fragrance of blossoms. The sunlight filters through the leaves, dappling the ground in shifting patterns of light and shadow. It is a place of quiet contemplation, a refuge from the bustling city beyond.
