Lianhua Gongyu. A name whispered with a blend of admiration and mystery. Here we stand before Lianhua Gongyu, a timeless testament to Shanghai’s vibrant past. Lianhua Gongyu, originally known as Avenue Apartments, graces the intersection of Beijing West Road, Tongren Road, and Nanyang Road. Its modernistic facade, clean lines, and three distinct rows of buildings tell a tale of elegance and resilience. Lianhua Gongyu’s story begins in 1932. Four visionary entrepreneurs, including Ye Fuzhen, Shen Laicheng, Tan Gongyuan, and a Hungarian architect named László Hudec, pooled their resources to create this architectural gem. Hudec himself oversaw the design. Lianhua Gongyu was originally a five-story structure, later gaining an additional floor in 1976. In the years following World War II, the original investors formed the Lianhua Real Estate Company, and Avenue Apartments became Lianhua Gongyu. The apartments were designed with modern conveniences, catering primarily to foreign residents. Gas, heating, hot water, and even separate entrances for residents and servants. The main entrance on the south side led to grand staircases. The north side had a smaller, more discreet entrance for servants, leading to service stairs. A food lift next to the servants’ quarters provided a convenient way to transport meals, reflecting the social dynamics of the time. Today, Lianhua Gongyu stands as a proud member of Shanghai’s third batch of Outstanding Historical Buildings. Across Tongren Road stands the Wu Tongwen Residence. This modern marvel, also designed by Hudec, shares a visual dialogue with Lianhua Gongyu. Across Beijing West Road, you’ll find the Lester Hospital, another architectural treasure and designated historical building. All three structures reside within the designated Nanyang Road Historical and Cultural Zone, a testament to their shared legacy and enduring significance. Lianhua Gongyu isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in brick and mortar. It’s a whisper of Shanghai’s cosmopolitan past.
